Space mice on Blockader’s moon have little time to admire the sights. A circular arena quickly transforms into a battleground as groups of enemies appear in ever-increasing numbers. Characters automatically use weapons, while the player must control movement, avoid being cornered, and find ways to utilize unlocked powers throughout the match.
This design gives Blockader a unique gameplay rhythm. You don't directly control each shot but focus on reading the situation on the screen. When a direction starts to be blocked, changing direction early is often more important than trying to eliminate another target.
Blockader uses a roguelite mechanism, so not every game is the same. After completing waves, players get to choose from random upgrade cards.
The system has over 100 upgrade cards with four rarity levels. Effects such as extra ammo, chain lightning, poison, arrows, or dragon allies can appear during gameplay.
It’s important to note that the cards aren’t a linear upgrade list. They can be combined to make distinct build routes.
An upgrade doesn't necessarily have to deal massive damage to be valuable. When the arena gets crowded, the ability to affect multiple targets or create additional damage sources can help your character maintain better space.
Players can also use Space to reroll current choices. This is a useful tool when the card group that appears doesn't fit the build being developed.
Blockader has 6 playable characters, each with their own Skill Tree to develop between plays. Stars collected in runs can be invested in Gear belonging to three groups: Offense, Defense, and Utility.
This forms a fairly clear loop:
The longer you play, the more side goals Blockader unlocks. Players can track collected upgrades, search for hidden mysteries, and try to improve their performance on the Wave Leaderboard.
The controls are also quite simple: WASD to move, 1–4 to select cards, Space to reroll, Tab to view stats, and Esc to pause.
Blockader builds its appeal from the variations between runs. You enter the same arena, but the upgrades you receive, the characters you use, and how you deal with each wave can lead to a completely different gameplay experience each time.
